Who does this guy think he is writing a blog?
And… who does he think is going to read this?
Most people know me from my work encouraging churches to include teaching with computers in Christian education. I’ve been teaching with software in Sunday School since 1990, and started Sunday Software Inc. full-time in 1996 www.sundaysoftware.com. I’m still amazed how much kids love this medium and believe we should harness that excitement for teaching purposes. Many of my software customers and friends talk to me about their churches, staff, and tech issues, -and often ask for advice. This blog is a place for some of the advice and observations I’ve made over the years that’s resonated with them.
Some people know me from my work with the Workshop Rotation Model for Sunday School, …a different way to organize your program and teach kids -which I had a hand in creating. It is estimated that over 9000 churches in N. America use the model. I was the founder of www.rotation.org -the model’s official website, and have been posting articles and thoughts over there for a number of years. This blog at Sundayresources.net will handle some of my thoughts that aren’t rotation related.
Both my software and rotation work began because I was dissatisfied with the way we did things in the church and believed things could change. Implementing change is another story. I’ve had successes and failures of my own, and heard from many other churches who’ve tackled their dissatisfactions. This blog shares some of those conclusions.
Over the years I’ve come to realize that I’ve been either blessed or cursed with a contrarian or iconoclastic approach to many topics and problems in the church. I’ve written and spoken about a number of my ideas and experiences, and they seem to resonate with many in the church. This blog is meant to consolidate and continue that discussion, -parts of which used to be scattered over several sites.
Three people (maybe more) know me from my articles and seminars about building a better church website. One of my ministries is to freely help church techies and pastors who are trying to better harness technology to improve their ministry. As a minister, educator, church volunteer, software developer, former church staff member, webguy, and as an occasional “visitor” looking for a congregation to land in, I bring some unique perspective to that work. This blog continues that discussion.
Disclaimer…
No, I don’t know everything, and I may be wrong about a few things. But I suspect I’m more right than wrong about a lot of things in the church. This blog is my way of trying to sort through my experiences and knowledge to try and come to some conclusions that might help.
Gilding the Lily…
My family and I have been living in suburban Columbus Ohio for the past 12 years. Before that we were in Chicago, and before that Western New York. We now live in and attend a small church on the island of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, -which explains a little bit about the ocean/water/beach imagery on this blog. They are photos I’ve taken of places where my soul feels deep. I have saltwater in my veins and feel a spiritual connection when I’m near the ocean.
